Inspired by the city's harsh realities, No Wave bands like DNA, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and artists such as Lydia Lunch and James Chance embraced chaos and experimentation. Their output—spanning music, film, and visual art—was intentionally abrasive, often improvisational, and fiercely independent. The movement’s brief but intense flare left a lasting mark on avant-garde culture, influencing noise rock, experimental film, and contemporary art.
